I have no illusions about Yemen, Libya ...Danny
I have no illusions about Yemen, Libya and even Egypt and Tunisia. Probably none will become a fully functioning democracy anytime soon. But as difficult as the future path might be I feel that it will be better and freer than under the regimes that have fallen.
There are many other Arab countries that have to join this trend towards democracy but I feel that the Syrian uprising must not be denied. The people have demonstrated tremendous courage. But the big prize after that will be the GCC. Would there be any meaningful change in KSA? during my lifetime?Ghassan Karamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15562232018685403280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807039862321845767.post-12426332502215114592011-08-23T14:02:14.383-04:002011-08-23T14:02:14.383-04:00Great analysis as usual. However, all the people of these nations have to realize that they will not prosper at the flick of the switch. it would be a long a painful process to establish modern institutions and a free culture.dannynoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807039862321845767.post-62149805860983735822011-08-23T11:41:22.556-04:002011-08-23T11:41:22.556-04:00Joseph,

Last year , in an interview in Europe, Bashar Assad told his European interviewer thta these are not real elections since there is only one person on the ballot. He would never say that to an Arab audience.
As for Asma, I cannot figure it out.I cannot accept that a mother would wish to burden her children with the legacy of a brutal father accused of murder and might eventually have to be dragged infront of a special tribunal.. Maybe she is power hungry, I have no clue. I do know though that her behaviour/silence is shameful.Ghassan Karamhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15562232018685403280noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807039862321845767.post-35247827656511243792011-08-23T08:36:43.434-04:002011-08-23T08:36:43.434-04:00In response to calls for him to step aside, Assad ...In response to calls for him to step aside, Assad is reported as saying "This cannot be said to a President who was elected by the people,"

My question is, do you think Assad genuinely believes he has been elected by the Syrian people and his position as president is legitimate?

Also, do you think his wife (western raised and educated) also believes her husband has legitimacy and her role as first lady is also legitimate?

Thoughts?josephnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807039862321845767.post-28479761947659796312011-08-23T06:17:22.295-04:002011-08-23T06:17:22.295-04:00First it was Tunis then Egypt, now it is Libya to ...First it was Tunis then Egypt, now it is Libya to be followed soon by Yemen then Syria.
